Who Am I? What am I?

Prologue:

Seriously. I’ve never tried this before, so forgive the anxiety, errors, or long-windedness.

I’d like to expand my site and give you a better sense of who I am, my interests, my current projects, and what I can offer professionally and creatively through blogs.

Who am I?

Chuck Braasch sitting in front of a couple of computer monitorsMy name is Chuck Braasch and I’m a graphic designer with over 20 years of professional design experience that includes web, video, audio, print, and motion graphics. I build stuff that makes people happy, and making people happy makes me happy. And what I do is cool and I love it!

I can thank my mom for that.

My mom (seen with me and my newborn brother)

my mom sitting in a chair holding my newborn brother with me standing in front of themWhen I was 4, Mom took me to see The Empire Strikes Back at the old movie theater downtown. It was the very first movie I ever saw in a movie theater and it was incredible!

And I had no idea what was going on because I didn’t see the original Star Wars film up to that point. And again, I was 4.

But thanks to Mom, that movie’s visuals, score, emotion, adventure, spectacle, heroics, fear, and storytelling had an impact on me. Then Dad tagged in.

It turns out, I have cool parents.

What Mom started with Empire, Dad solidified with art, comics, video games, animation, sci-fi, and fantasy films and shows. He introduced me to so many different avenues of visual storytelling. Star Trek, Disney’s The Black Hole, Lost in Space, James Bond, Star Wars toys, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, The A-Team, corny WWF wrestling, Nintendo… He and I shared so much cool stuff together.

As I entered high school, I felt destined to make special effects. My goal was to join George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic special effects company in California. This is the special effects company responsible for such visually exciting franchises as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and a whole list of movies too numerous to mention.

For an incredible documentary on the history of ILM, check out Light & Magic on Disney+!

However, there were no special effects programs in The Middle of Nowhere, Wisconsin. If I couldn’t make it to California to work on movie special effects, then what to I do? How do I find some big career after high school and college?

Soon after that, it dawned on me that I had been creating “special effects” through my refrigerator art since Mom took me with her to see The Empire Strikes Back. No California needed.

Paper and graphic design will be my canvas instead of the silver screen. That was definitely within my reach.

Epilogue

So here I am after all this time with a long history of creating visually engaging digital and print designs. It’s not the movies, but all the work has been a movie of my life in a way.

Please check out some of the work I’ve created below, and let me know your thoughts! I’d love to hear them.

Thank you for your time!

Kind regards,

Chuck
